Uncle Rico's World

This past weekend we went to a
Civil War Reenactment

One of the first tables we stopped at
displayed civil war items
that two men had found using metal detectors.

Look at the knife!

Bonnie Belle....
it's a southern name
she's a southern gal

Kitschy

This fellow was a swearin' it was about to snow.

But we enjoyed watching him making something...

The American Flag
alongside the "Stainless" Flag

A replica of the H.L. Hunley
the civil war submarine
that was recently found...

this replica was only 4" too long and 4" too tall
but otherwise was just like the real one.

Remarkable considering the man who drew the dimensions
had been in the actual Hunley 60 years before.

A classic campsite
the lengthwise banner shows which group it represents...
see the mirror hanging up?

One of the creepier displays...
bone saws in the medical tent...

I have a bunch of pictures with
nasty little instruments
like these...

The poor Union soldiers...
they told my husband that they had read the script
and knew they were going to win....

Rebel soldier up in a tree...
a sharpshooter

Notice the rebel soldiers' uniforms don't always match...
very realistic

isn't that a gorgeous horse?

Clever rebel soldiers...
sneaking around back to surprise the Union

A rebel soldier goes down...
Medic!!

Ah, the beauty of the "Stainless" Flag
in the gun powder haze of the woods...

The Broxton Bridge Battle is well known...
as a fight that occurred late in the Civil War
during Sherman's march to the sea...
AND
it is well known that
The North won this battle.

But
last weekend...
the South won.

It seems that the Southerner's
are a lot like Uncle Rico in the movie "Napolean Dynamite."
They have to play the tapes over and over
and get frustrated over and over...
wondering over and over..
thinking...and discussing whether
if this or that had happened...
they would have won...
and gone pro...
ah...I mean...been their own country.

Ahem.

It's okay that people reenact the Civil War...
but to pretend over and over
that they won...
is bordering on
so.
very.
sad.

My daughter has two acquaintances at school,
both young men, who do civil war reenactments.
One was there at the battle at Broxton Bridge last weekend.
Obviously, on the Rebel side...duh.
When my daughter told him it was perplexing that the
South won the battle on Saturday...
he retorted...
"The North won when we did it again on Sunday!"

:: sigh ::

Ah yes...
speaking of snow...from an earlier picture...
this young man also claimed that
"it snowed Saturday at the battle!"

Um.
We were there.
No.
Snow.

Perhaps he saw a piece of ash from a fire?

Know what we love about Southerners?
Southerns love them some snow!

Now THAT'S something we can agree upon!

Oh, my goodness that looks like it was so neat! My husband and I love to go to museums. I'd love to go to a re-enactment but I don't think that will happen anytime soon. Thanks for letting me live it through you! :)
